HOW IT ALL BEGAN
On a rainy weekend, we found ourselves weary of playing the same mahjong card over and over and decided to shake things up. We expanded the tile key and created a themed card, and as Texans, we made  Lone Star themed hands. What started as a simple weekend project quickly turned into Whimsy Mah Jongg, a new twist on an old game that friends and family love.

Mah Jongg itself is a relatively modern game, originating in the mid-to-late 1800s along China's Yangtze River Delta. By the late 19th century, it had taken hold in cities like Shanghai and Beijing, though it was still largely regional. In the early 1920s, its popularity exploded internationally, thanks in part to marketers and businessmen like Joseph Park Babcock. His mahjong sales company introduced the game to American expatriates in China and soon after, the game was marketed as an exotic and cosmopolitan pastime for Americans.

Initially, it became a fad among the elite, including President Harding and Hollywood stars, but soon it swept the nation. For many Americans, mahjong represented a way to participate in the new, modern world while embracing something foreign and glamorous. Women, in particular, took to the game, often dressing up in elaborate costumes to play with their friends at home. In doing so, they explored new cultural and gender boundaries, mixing respectability with the allure of its perceived mystery.

We hope you will enjoy playing the cards as much as we do!
